Bodron Fruit’s Tribute to Mid-Century Modern Designer, Howard Meyer

In 2001, Bodron Fruit was called on to revitalize a home called the Lipshy House, originally designed by Howard Meyer in the 1950’s. Because of their passion for preserving mid-century modern-style homes, the Dallas interior design and architecture firm was the perfect fit for the project.

First, Bodron Fruit gutted the house, stripping it down to its original brick detailing, removing modern additions, and wiping it clean of alterations it had undergone over the decades. This allowed the Dallas interior designer and architect to see an accurate picture of Meyer’s original vision. 

In rebuilding the Lipshy House, Bodron Fruit made sure to rebuild with Meyer’s original plans at top of mind. From precise spatial planning and flow to proper proportioning, the team was committed to staying true to Meyer’s forward-thinking design. The first elements to be restored were the home’s original built-in pieces. It featured birch cabinets, a modern staircase, interior brick, and more. The Dallas interior designer and architect painstakingly restored each of these in an effort to bring back the home’s original charm.

Restoring the home’s steel casement windows proved to be a challenge, however. Bodron Fruit had no choice but to bring Meyer’s original metalsmith out of retirement, as his superior craftsmanship was the only way to do Meyer's work justice. The Dallas architect and interior design firm also restored the home’s original interior brick, which was another challenge. Because the brick had been previously painted over, the firm had to make an educated approximation of its original tone. 

One element that had to be preserved rather than restored was Meyer’s original open floor plan. Bodron Fruit’s expert designers are proponents of open concept homes, as they often facilitate free movement and natural connection between spaces. In Meyer’s original design, indoor and outdoor integration was a seamless feature. In maintaining cohesive indoor-outdoor connection, Bodron Fruit kept many elements that promoted it, such as the home’s pool at the base of the staircase. 

The Dallas interior designer and architect also focused on making sure materials found throughout the home were authentic and consistent with Meyer’s original design. From finishes and surfaces to lighting styles, every choice that Bodron Fruit made paid homage to Meyer’s vision.
